Managing Your Stress

Stress may be affecting your health and life without you even realizing it.  There are different kinds of stress, but one you definitely want to limit is distress, or “negative stress”.  Distress is very common in modern society and can be classified further as acute stress or chronic stress. Acute stress is short-lived while chronic stress is usually prolonged in nature.

Over periods of time, stress can contribute to serious health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.  The following table can help you identify whether or not stress is affecting your life.

After observing the table above, you can see why stress management is important.   Don’t wait until stress is negatively impacting your relationships, health or quality of life. Start incorporating a range of stress management techniques today.  Some strategies to explore include:

  • Physical activity
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Meditation
  • Yoga
  • Tai chi

If you’ve taken steps to control your stress and symptoms still occur, or if you are unsure whether symptoms are caused by stress, go see your doctor.  They can check for other potential causes.
